I’m fascinated by backstage life, the artificiality of the stage world, a constructed dream world created for a play. A nighttime blue pervades the painting as we sneak a look over the shoulder of an actor about to make his entrance. Well, this is one way of looking at the painting but it can also be experienced as an environment of layered marks and colours, the figure over the shoulder of the protagonist, in the distance, is etched through the white paint in a very primitive and direct way. The primitive quality is deliberate and derives from the struggle to make the painting work, by whatever means possible, not just as a ‘picture’ but as a visceral presence in its own right both seen and felt in the bones.
