The subject of this painting is the painter’s studio, a well-known genre within the art of painting. Interlude is about what it feels like being in a place, an interlude, between two kinds of spaces, the illusory world of the painting and the real world of the studio and its objects. The insubstantial figure is in his studio; there is a table, the brown handle of my easel to the left and the recessed structure of my skylight above. The space is shifting, mysterious, and unstable in dark greens and strident whites. I like to paint thickly; the paint is dragged, scraped back and laid on again; the process of making the painting involved many changes and fragments of previous stages glimmer through the gaps and fissures of the surface.
Apart from painting, I love to do theatre acting, where the interaction of offstage mundane ‘reality’ and the illusory dream world of the stage is particularly felt in the ‘interlude’ between acts.
