To begin with, the kinds of spaces I am drawn towards are usually familiar to me; the studio, figures, sometimes streets and buildings. This is where the inspiration starts – the desire to do something with a view, a standpoint, a set of environmental factors that intrigue and captivate. Then comes the challenge of accomodating or exploring that initial idea within the improvised means of painting. Imagination takes over and often very little of the original idea remains.

Studio 2021

David studied painting at the Byam Shaw School of Art (1987-1990).

There followed residencies at The Florence Trust (1992-93) and the Digswell Arts Trust (1994-98), then many years working in various London studios until his move to Hastings, East Sussex in 2010.

He works almost exclusively with oil paint on canvas the main points of focus being figures, spaces and environments; a mixture of perception from life and an imaginative elaboration of that experience.
